Glacier Spit/Saddle Trail
Looking for a stunning day hike that’s well-suited for most ages and abilities? Want to camp on a beautiful Alaskan beach with miles of shoreline and forest to explore? Check out the Glacier Spit/Grewingk Glacier Trail! We’ll drop you off at the trailhead on the beach at Glacier Spit, where you’ll meander through a beautiful spruce forest which opens up to glacial moraines that offer wonderful vistas of mountains and ice. At Grewingk Lake, you’ll see the Grewingk Glacier pouring off the Harding Ice Field and calving icebergs into the lake. It can be chilly at the lake (the water has ice floating in it!), so dress in layers! On your return, you’ll follow the signs to go up and over the Saddle Trail to your pick-up location, with great views of Halibut Cove Lagoon on your way down to the trailhead. The hike is 6.5 miles of mostly flat terrain on a well-maintained trail, except for the moderate (500’) elevation gain over the Saddle Trail. It’s about a 3-hour hike, or you can pack your lunch and make a day of it! For the more adventurous, you can take a detour to check out the hand-operated tram, which takes you across Grewingk Creek and connects to Humpy Creek and Emerald Lake Trails. And if you’re looking to camp, there are some great spots around Grewingk Lake, or at Rusty’s Lagoon, and all along Glacier Spit.
